It’s a classic Amish recipe providing satisfying, budget-friendly deliciousness perfect with mashed potatoes or noodles.
Ingredients
For the patties:
2 pounds ground beef
1 cup crushed saltine cracker crumbs
1 scant cup milk
½ small onion, finely chopped
1 ½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp chili powder
½ tsp garlic powder
¼ – ½ cup all-purpose flour (for coating)
3 tablespoons butter (for frying)
For the gravy:
1 or 2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 ½ cups milk
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, mix crushed saltine crumbs, milk, chopped onion, and all seasonings. Add the ground beef and gently combine until just blended.
Shape the mixture into 8 thick hamburger patties.
Coat each patty in flour, shaking off the excess.
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry patties a few minutes on each side until browned and seared.
Transfer the browned patties to the prepared baking dish.
In a separate bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour this gravy evenly over the patties.
Cover the dish and bake for 50–55 minutes. Remove the cover and bake another 10 minutes to thicken the gravy and finish cooking.
Serve hot over mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
